TV5 workers ask DOLE to stop retrenchment

Image
MANILA, Philippines – The TV5 worker unions have filed a complaint before the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in a bid to stop the network’s retrenchment program, which will affect some 700 employees. In a complaint filed before the DOLE’s National Conciliation and Mediation Board on October 5, 2018 the ABC-5 Employees Union claimed the network committed “unfair labor practices.” This is the 4th complaint filed against TV5 management in less than 2 years, they said. “The issues consist of mass termination of employment, lockout, Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) violation on retrenchment pay, bargaining in bad faith/refusal to negotiate a new CBA, among others,” said the groups. The management notified some 700 employees last October 1, 2018 that their employment will be terminated after November 15, 2018. The notice further stated that all workers are no longer required to report for work thereafter. The retrenchment, according to the management, is part of efforts to cu...

TV5 employees nagpapasaklolo sa DOLE

Image
Iginiit n...

Akbayan joins TV5 unions' march to Mendiola, calls for suspension of retrenchment

Image
A kbayan Party expressed its solidarity and strong support for the workers unions of TV5, the ABC 5 Employees’ Unions (ABC EU/ Rank-and-file Union), today, as the unions led labor groups on a march to Mendiola to protest their impending retrenchment. Labeling the 700 workers “public servants” for having worked for TV5 in its operations as a public broadcasting agency, Akbayan Representative Walden Bello joined his voice with that of workers to demand that management suspend the retrenchment of workers and that it be made accountable for violations. “Akbayan is one with the TV5 unions in their fight. We will not allow TV5 management to abuse workers who provided the backbone of their operations, workers who served in the interest of the Filipino people,” Akbayan Representative Walden Bello said. According to Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello, management’s decision to retrench workers was done “in utter bad faith and blatant disregard to the welfare of workers,” especially after it signed a memo...

According to Drilon and Hontiveros, RP...

Image
I t was revealed Monday, during the plenary deliberation on the budget of the Presidential Communications Operations Office that the government was unable to pay in full the separation benefits of the 713 retrenched employees of Associated Broadcasting Company (TV5). “Not all the benefits, admittedly, were paid to the extent that they should be, simply because there were not enough cash to pay the claims,” Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who is defending the budget on behalf of PCOO replied. He said TV5 has P300 million to P500 million accumulated losses. It also incurred a capital deficiency of more than P4 billion. PCOO head Martin Andanar was beside Drilon during the deliberation. TV5 is under the supervision of the MediaQuest Holdings, Inc., even though the private has only a 100 percent share in the network. TV5 sports and news programs to go off the air; 700 TV5 workers laid off

Image
TV5 Network, Inc. (TV5) (formerly Associated Broadcasting Company) will soon pull the plug on one of the country’s TV5's sports and news channel, “ESPN5,” which first aired in 2017, and will lay off 700 of its employees. Secretary Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) told a briefing Tuesday at the Palace that the Duterte administration had no more say in the operations of the privatized network, including the retrenchment of 700 TV5 employees. Andanar said the government could not stop the retrenchment since its “participation is limited” to the two TV5 board members representing the Kapatid network Ray C. Espinosa and Noel Lorenzana, former president of TV5. TV5 is no longer a sports channel. The Kapatid network owned by MediaQuest Holdings, Inc.’s equity is only 100 percent while 70 percent, or two-thirds is already owned by private corporations and MVP Group of Companies, he said. TV5 management, now in the hands of Cignal TV, Inc., MediaQue...

TV5 to cut 700 jobs, may stop airing TV5 Sports programming 'ESPN5'

MANILA, Philippines – Financial losses of TV network Associated Broadcasting Company (now TV5 Network, Inc.) (TV5) will result in the retrenchment of 700 employees and uncertainties over its TV5's sports programming "ESPN5" one of the country's pioneer sports and news channel programs. In press briefing on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar said his office will monitor the network's compliance to the Labor Code provisions in terminating the services of workers.  "The PCOO continues to supervise the operations and management of TV5 and, as we have declared in all of our appearances and statements before both House of Congress, government is committed to protect the rights of the employees of TV5", Andanar said.  The government, however, only has a minority 20.8% stake in following a previous court ruling, Andanar said. Laid-off TV5 workers appeal ‘unjust’ separation pay

Image
M ANILA , Philippines – Associated Broadcasting Company (TV5) employees who were affected by the TV network’s retrenchment program here are asking the management for due compensation after some reportedly received unjust separation pay offers. He said one of them, seasoned RPN-DYKC Cebu radio announcer Egmidio “Emie” Bustillo, was informed he would get a separation pay of only P400,000, instead of P4 million — the amount he was supposed to get for over 24 years of service in the company. “They (affected employees) were promised due compensation by the network, but the offer was not enough based on their computation,” noted Tangcawan. Tangcawan said others who served fewer years would only be given P350,000 each. The MVP Group of Companies, however, now only owns a minor 20.8% stake in TV5 following a Supreme Court ruling and several capital raising activities that saw the entry of private groups in the company. The company is undertaking a retrenchment program to trim its financial los...

Major TV channel TV5 winds down sports programs and shows

Image
M ANILA, Philippines - TV5 Network, Inc. (TV5) is no longer a sports programs and shows and any retrenchment of employees must comply with the Labor Code, Malacañang said yesterday. Secretary Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) said TV5 was placed under his office’s supervision by virtue of Executive Order 4. “We continue to monitor the developments in TV5 to ensure that all the rights of the employees under the Labor Code are adequately protected,” he said. Andanar said TV5 has been incurring financial losses and had to let go of the employees. “All I know is that they were not able to attain profitable operations from the time that it was decided by the previous administration to allow the equity conversion of the Cignal TV Group to the extent of 34 percent,” he said.  “And, from that time, Cignal has been a block timer of TV5 and, if you would see the programming now, there are only two hours more or less of news and public information that...
